    Steeped in history

A Mr and Mrs Woods had Kananook built in the 1880s. The Lindenow Racecourse was created on the Estate also, with the last horse race of each meeting called the “Kananook Plate”.

One complete wing of Kananook was the result of an 1880s Victorian historic addition and “renovation” that contributes to the charm of the “Private Residence” Apartment Villa today:

    • Baltic Pine weatherboards were used on the external walls instead of Iron Bark and, eye catching featured gables adorn over every exterior Victorian end wall.
    • Beautiful regency Baltic Pine interior wall lining boards used in part throughout, provide a lovely ambience giving that warm and cosy feel to the open plan kitchen, dining, living/entertainment area.
    • Baltic pine flooring and the very cutest double sash kitchen window will catch your eye.
    • The Villa also features 3 Victorian exterior gables above the rooms sash windows.
    • The renovation also saw detailed and intricate Victorian profile architraves installed in place of the earlier simple examples of the early Colonial Victorian architraves.
    • Hard larden plaster walls on laths were utilised in the new wing replacing the much earlier alternative in Colonial breezy wallpaper on hessian over wooden lining boards.
    • The front room of this renovation also had additional decorative cornicing and a ceiling rose.

The extra wide antique wall lining boards from under the wallpaper are now a feature of Kananook Homesteads hardwood floors and the bathroom counter is made from the original antique reclaimed feature timber.

Just as the Lindenow Cup transferred to the racetrack in Bairnsdale, 1880s Kananook Heritage House has relocated to Bairnsdale and now overlooks the beautiful Mitchell River Valley at Picnic Point.

Recently completed major repairs, restorations, refurbishments and renovations are complimented with quality modern conveniences and amenities, to create a premier Luxury Getaway Retreat that includes purpose built apartment accommodation as part of the original homestead that's now fully insulated, with heating and cooling.

We invite you to experience the relaxed tranquil charm of 1880s Kananook to relax, rejuvenate and unwind for your next holiday escape and experience a luxury getaway with a past, and a piece of Victorian history.”
